Hardware Engineer – Robotic Hand (m/f/d)

We are a Berlin-based deep-tech robotics startup building next-generation anthropomorphic robotic hands with unprecedented dexterity. You will join our core startup team to rapidly design, build, and iterate physical hardware prototypes where mechanical design meets embedded control.

Overview

Why this role matters

In partnership with leading Berlin research institutions, we are pushing the boundaries of high-dexterity manipulation for complex real-world robotics challenges. Dexterous robotic manipulation requires rapid mechanical evolution, and this role exists to turn cutting-edge ideas into functional, benchmarked hardware without getting bogged down in slow development cycles.

Responsibilities

What you'll do

Full-cycle hardware development and physical prototyping for our anthropomorphic robotic hand system.

  • Design and implement mounting solutions and electronic interfaces for seamless integration with host robotic platforms.
  • Optimize mechanical architecture, refining finger geometry, tendon routing, and thermal management strategies.
  • Integrate robust sensing modalities, including fiber-optic sensing, without compromising mechanical durability.
  • Build custom test rigs and benchmarking protocols to evaluate durability, precision, and duty cycles.
  • Develop and iterate low-level microcontroller firmware and low-level control loops in C++ and Python.

Candidate profile

Who this is a fit for

  • Degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Robotics, or a related discipline.
  • Practical expertise in CAD design, rapid prototyping (SLA, SLS, FDM), and microcontroller-based PCB development.
  • Experience or strong interest in tendon-driven mechanisms, anthropomorphic systems, and thermal management.
  • Comfortable writing C++ or Python for low-level control, system calibration, and sensor integration.
  • Bias for action: you turn concepts into physical, testable hardware rapidly.
  • Able to work fully on-site in Berlin alongside our co-located engineering team.

Culture

What it's like to work here

Fast-paced deep-tech environment with hardware and software engineers co-located in one room iterating directly on physical prototypes, operating with flat hierarchies. Thriving engineers are intrinsically motivated, hands-on, take ownership of tasks, and proactively ask for help and insights across disciplines.

What you get

The offer

  • Co-located, tight feedback loop with hardware and software engineers in the same prototyping room.
  • Direct impact as a core hardware engineer shaping cutting-edge robotic manipulation technology.
  • Access to advanced rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing infrastructure at MotionLab.Berlin.
  • A flat-hierarchy deep-tech culture focused on fast iterations, shared ownership, and technical rigor.

Skills

CAD design · PCB development · Microcontrollers · Rapid prototyping · Additive manufacturing (SLA/SLS/FDM) · Mechatronics · C++ · Python · Low-level control · Tendon-driven robotic mechanisms · Anthropomorphic robotic hands · Thermal management for compact robotics · Fiber-optic sensing · System calibration / identification

A quick note

This probably isn't for you if:

  • You prefer remote work, pure simulation, or hand-off engineering over daily hands-on shop-floor prototyping.
  • You require rigid corporate structures, siloed disciplines, and slow, waterfall development cycles.
  • You hesitate to iterate quickly, test to failure, or proactively seek cross-disciplinary input.
